STAETE LANDT

MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

It's probably safe to say that everyone is familiar with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. With its popularity skyrocketing in the early 2000s and showing no signs of slowing down, thousands of new labels continue to flood the market. But in the sea of new labels, the producers practicing serious, terroir-focused viticulture are the ones worth your attention. The wines being produced by Staete Landt are perhaps more reminiscent of Sancerre than what we think of as “typical” Marlborough, and showcase the amazing potential of this region. With Staete Landt, it is clear that there is an intimate understanding of the history and terroir of this region. Today, we are thrilled to present Staete Landt through three unique expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. While the wines continue to defy expectation, the price-to-quality ratio remains truly exceptional—these are prices you’ll have to see to believe. This offer calls for stocking up!

Driven by a passion to showcase Marlborough's potential as one of the great wine regions of the world, Ruud Maasdam left the Netherlands for the Golden Triangle of Rapaura, one of the oldest and most established appellations of Marlborough. Inspired by the original maps of New Zealand (formerly known as ‘Staete Landt’ after it was discovered by the Dutch in 1642), Ruud began in-depth research and geological analysis of the entire vineyard, mapping out every detail. This profound understanding of the land led to 19 different plots, each planted with the specific varieties and clones best suited for the respective plot. And in the winery, each plot is vinified separately and treated like its own wine until the final blend.

Each of today’s wines display impressive diversity; while ‘Map Maker’ presents a classic Marlborough profile of gooseberry, passionfruit, and fresh herbs, ‘Annabel’ is perhaps more Loire-like in quality, and offers a richly textured palate and intense minerality. ‘Duchess’ is made in more of a traditional Chardonnay fashion: it undergoes fermentation in old French oak, with partial malolactic fermentation and extended maturation in old oak for 10 months, adding a roundness of texture and suppleness without intense oak flavor. This is a Sauvignon Blanc like you’ve never experienced before—the intense fruitiness has been dialed back, and the wine coats the palate with nuances that weave between lemon, vanilla, and currant. For a true taste of Marlborough’s diversity and potential, look no further than today’s offer.
