SPOTTSWOODE ESTATE CABERNET
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2023
Spottswoode has just released the latest edition of its flagship, and The Wine Advocate has already anointed it. The 100-point 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon doesn’t just belong among the “legends” produced at this estate, the publication wrote, but “should stand tall” among them.
Even for a winery accustomed to the most exalted accolades, that’s one helluva endorsement.
The Wine Advocate hailed it for its “density” and “concentration,” which "somehow come without weight,” its "silky tannins,” its "lovely, elegant mouthfeel,” and its "tremendous length on the finish.”
What more could a collector want?
We would just add that all of the above is the house style distilled to its essence — that old-school, almost Old World control and sophistication that has long made Spottswoode the choice of Bordeaux lovers who find themselves inexplicably — nay, helplessly — drawn to Napa.
At our recent tasting, we were of two minds about it: enormously eager to see what another ten years of aging in bottle would bring, but knowing that we, ourselves, would be hard put not to open it right away; that’s how alluring this is.
Rounding out today's offer, and a superlative wine in its own right: the 2022 vintage in 3-liter format, which The Wine Advocate, in a lavish 98-point review, praised for its "juicy fruit successfully framed by silky, soft tannins.” We found it to be plush, persistent, and generous, and mouthwatering on the finish.
In other words: the perfect magnum-format wine.
If there’s a thread that connects all three of these wines, it’s history and continuity.
Which makes sense because, when you talk about Napa, you have to talk about Spottswoode. It was there at the beginning.
Not in the 1970s, in the wake of the legendary "Judgment of Paris” — no, no, we're going all the way back to the 19th century, to 1882, when Napa was just acres of scrubby farmland … and anything but trendy.
The modern chapter of Spottswoode began in the 1970s, when the Novak family took over and released its first Cabernet in 1982, exactly a hundred years after the estate's founding. Those early releases became highly sought-after, and, in short order, Spottswoode became a cult favorite, beloved for the extraordinary quality of its carefully crafted, richly attenuated Cabernets. The family has also been a staunch advocate of sustainability. It has been farming organically since 1985, and, in 1992, became one of the valley's first certified organic wineries.
One of the many things we love about them is their unerring consistency, the fact that you can count on them to bring the greatness, in vintage after vintage. And there are few estates that combine Old World finesse and New World energy quite like this.
We think these wines will not just wow you and move you but also lodge themselves in your memory, and can’t wait to hear from you about them.
