SILVER OAK
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
When an estate like Silver Oak announces a debut release, the entire wine world takes note.
And when that debut release clocks in at just $75 a bottle, heads turn.
This is a very big deal, folks, and we're proud to be able to bring it to you.
The wine is called Up Valley, an homage to the 4 distinct vineyard sites from which it was sourced, and what struck us is how much suavity, depth, and finesse it packs for the price.
Mark it: this is going to be your bring-out-for-everything wine.
But wait, we're not done …
We've also secured two unicorns of theirs from the Premiere Napa Valley auction, never to be repeated, along with two back-vintage beauties, one from 2008 and the other from 2011.
First, the unicorns. When we tasted these, we knew immediately that we had to race to secure them.
“Echoes of Exceptionality” 2022 is a single-block Cabernet sourced almost entirely from Soda Canyon Ranch, the volcanic-soil estate that inspired Silver Oak's luxury Timeless Napa Valley label. Only 240 bottles exist in the world. This is an intensely rich wine, with lush layers of blackberry, dark cherry, bramble fruit, and warm vanilla, and you’ll want to break it out with friends.
“Heritage Homecoming” 2021 is a PNV lot blend from what is universally considered one of the greatest vintages in California of the century. A drought-shaped growing season produced tiny, concentrated berries, and the wine shows it. This is dense and complex, with unusual notes of carnation, licorice, and baking spice. It’s going to age beautifully.
Now, to step back in time -- first with the 2008 Alexander Valley, which Wine & Spirits singled out for its “textural finesse,” a wine full of “nuance” and “supple richness.” Eighteen years after bottling, it's drinking gloriously, with the structure to evolve for another decade-plus, at least.
The 2011 Napa is no less rewarding. Decanter hailed its “generosity,” and called it “one to savor over a long meal,” and we couldn't agree more. Fifteen years of bottle age have mellowed it, but the aromatics are still there, as is the structure, and this unfurls with fluidity and grace.
What all of these bottles share, in one form or another, is the Silver Oak signature: a commitment to American oak (much of it from the winery's own Missouri cooperage), block-by-block attention in the vineyard, and a stylistic approach that finds the seam between the big, swaggering wines of Napa’s recent past and the more sculpted, more finessed wines of today. Laura Oskwarek now heads up the winemaking, and is only the fourth to hold that title in the label's history.
Five wines, three eras, one extraordinary estate.
