The Story: In recent years, this Napa icon has transcended the world of vintners, connoisseurs, and collectors to become the it-winery of athletes and celebrities. According to the Robb Report, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr refers to Silver Oak Cabernet as his "girlfriend," while Lebron James has tweeted his love, and Peyton Manning has been known to hand out cases to friends. Santana, Matthew McConaughey, and Oprah have all declared their fandom, with the latter going so far as to call it her favorite among all wines. All that starry love might incline some to be skeptical of the quality of the winemaking, but in fact, the level of craft at this family-owned estate, which last year celebrated its 50th year, is second to none. And so is the level of terroir-centered detail. Winemaker Nate Weis, only the third in the label's history, pays keen attention to each block in his vineyard, and picks his grapes at different times throughout harvest to ensure the exact, right concentration he seeks. More and more Napa estates are moving away from the fruit bombs of a generation ago, but Silver Oak has been there all along, proving that there is a happy medium between fruit and structure, and that the best, most enduring, and most delicious wines are those that are built upon the timeless truths of balance, refinement, and nuance.
Specs: Cabernet Sauvignon is predominant in the blend, with trace amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. It was aged for 24 months in oak sourced from Silver Oak's cooperage, The Oak, which, according to owner David Duncan (as reported by James Suckling), "tones down the vanilla character in the wine."
Our Tasting Notes: Impressive from first sip to last: enticing aromatics, velvety tannins, mouthwatering acidity, a long and poised finish, and, underneath it all, a savory, complex character and subtle spice that gives the wine that certain something that compels you to keep coming back to it.
