SIERRA CANTABRIA, MAGICO

RIOJA, SPAIN 2010

When it comes to the Spanish wine revolution of the last few decades, the iconic importer Jorge Ordonez, twice named by Robert Parker as one of the top 20 wine personalities of the year, has introduced wine lovers to some of the greatest pioneering powerhouses from all over Spain, including those from the country’s most renowned region, Rioja. One of those leading pioneers defining the wines of Rioja today is Sierra Cantabria, whose intense and powerful 2010 “Magico” exemplifies the best of Ordonez’s acclaimed portfolio. A newer cuvee showcasing the craft of Marcos Eguren, finalist for Wine Enthusiast’s Best Worldwide Winemaker in 2009 and 2012 and one of the standout winemakers of Spain, today’s wine is a bold and brilliant, 99-point beauty from a single vineyard over a century old that is essential for anyone’s collection.

Simply put, century-old vineyards do not exist in Rioja, making the El Vardallo vineyard an exceptionally unique and special 1.5 hectares. Planted between 1905 and 1907 and located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra from an altitude of 700 meters, the vineyard combines Tempranillo and Garnacha with several indigenous grapes, including both red and white varieties. Staying true to the “magic” of the terroir, Eguren lets the grapes speak for themselves through a field blend from biodynamic and sustainable farming practices: the land is 100% dry-farmed, plowed by horse and manually harvested. From sandy clay soils, with a cap of iron and limestone-rich clay that is crucial for water retention, the grapes are destemmed by hand and produce a wine that is hedonistically opulent and nuanced.

With varieties such as Graciano, Petit Bouschet, Torrontes and Viura complementing the blend of Garnacha and clones of Tempranillo (including Tinto de Toro), the 2010 “Magico” is rich and concentrated, with notes of dark, brooding fruit and smoky earth complemented by gorgeous aromatics. Aged for 20 months in French oak, the wine is “heavenly” (Jeb Dunnuck) and will easily keep for 2 to 3 decades, making this a one-of-kind, deliciously decadent treat that is the definition of cellar-worthy. With a limited allocation of 30 bottles (and the first bottles to be released in the country) we suggest placing your orders as soon as possible as this Jorge Ordonez selection is sure to sell out.
