SETTE PONTI ORENO
TUSCANY, ITALY 2023
WHY BUY:
Not only did James Suckling lavish 98 points on this flagship wine from one of Tuscany’s most ascendant estates, a seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, but he also named it No. 16 of his Top 100 Wines of Italy of 2025. The wonder for us is that a Super Tuscan of this size, depth, concentration, integration, and length is only $100 a bottle. Lay in for a case or two; you won’t be sorry. This is a wine you’ll keep coming back to — for every dinner party, for every special occasion, for every non-occasion when you just want to treat yourself to something special and leave the world behind. As we tell people all the time: one sip of Oreno, and you’re likely to be hooked forever after.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
A “dark and complex wine,” wrote Suckling, in his 98-point paean, “earthy and concentrated yet balanced. … [I]t displays a dynamic palate with dense, velvety tannins, fruit concentration and crisp, integrated acidity, which keeps it in balance. Gorgeous ..."
OUR TASTING NOTES:
A big, rich, and enveloping wine that also manages to be graceful, nuanced, and lyrically expressive. Texturally, it’s so sumptuous that you could be forgiven, initially, for missing its energy and freshness and tension. The tannins are well-developed and impressive, carrying you from mid-palate to finish with seamlessness and ease. The finish stretches on with a wonderful savory depth that imprints itself upon your memory. Pour this now and marvel at your great good fortune.
THE STORY:
Once upon a time, this was a charming country estate, dating to the 13th century, that city folk decamped to for a weekend retreat. The Arno River, famously captured in da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” lies within hailing distance. But then, in the late 1990s, Dr. Antonio Moretti, who had inherited the property from his father, hired Carlo Ferrini (widely regarded as one of Italy's top winemakers, and the winner of Oenologist and Winemaker of the Year three times by the Italian Sommelier Association) to establish the vineyards. Then Moretti brought in Giuseppe “Beppe” Caviola to push quality even higher. Caviola’s philosophy is to produce wines of balance, ageability, and terroir expression. And that m.o., coupled with great care in both the vineyard and cellar, has resulted in a remarkable record of consistency over the past decade. Sette Ponti doesn’t command the hype of Sassicaia or Ornellaia, but insiders have come to recognize it as one of Tuscany's smartest value plays.
SPECS:
A blend, predominantly, of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot for definitionality and softness.
WHAT TO PAIR IT WITH:
Lusty Tuscan preparations are the way to go: bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragu over pappardelle, osso buco braised low and slow. But this is also showing beautifully all by its lonesome, so you might want to just sit with it and pass the hours with nothing more than a wedge of aged Parmigiano-Reggiano.
FUN FACT:
The estate contains more than vineyards. There’s also a 16th-century villa, a chapel, and several farmhouses, all carefully restored to preserve their historic character. In short: a picture-perfect postcard expression of Tuscany.
OUR GUARANTEE:
As always, we only buy and source directly from the estate, so rest assured: your wine will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance. Values like this in the world of Super Tuscans don’t come along every day, so secure your bottles and cases today!
