SEÑA
VALLE DE ACONCAGUA, CHILE 2022
WHY BUY: Jeb Dunnuck lavished 98 points on Seña's 2022 vintage, calling it "composed and commanding, with fantastic poise and clarity" — and at just $120 a bottle, and from an estate with this pedigree (Robert Mondavi got it off the ground), that's a major steal of a deal in our book. And if you're a Bordeaux lover, you don't want to miss the gorgeous pair of Viñedo Chadwicks we're also bringing you, their 99-point 2018 and their 98-point 2022. If you were to blind taste these incredible Bordeaux blends, you’d swear to me you were drinking wines from the Left Bank.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: The Wine Advocate called the Viñedo Chadwick 2018, in a 99-point rave of a review, "a spectacular wine from front to back" that's "svelte and seamless, exuding a perfectly textured polish” — in short, "a bona fide modern classic.” It was nearly as enamored of the 2022 vintage, a 98-pointer that is "equal parts composed and commanding" with "fantastic poise and clarity" that "should deliver immense pleasure for two decades.” The Seña 2022 earned 98 points, too, with James Suckling noting that it's "already open and enticing” and boasts "extremely polished tannins that caress your palate.” Suckling weighed in, as well, on the Seña Rocas de Seña 2022, a “refined” and “pretty” wine with “fine tannins."
OUR TASTING NOTES: The Viñedo Chadwick 2018 is remarkable in the way it keeps building without ever coming across as over-determined or constructed. There's something almost hypnotic about how seamlessly it moves from richness to restraint, from dark fruit to mineral complexity. In the end, and gloriously, you forget that you're analyzing and just surrender to the experience. The 2022 carries more architectural energy, with a compelling (and enlivening) tension between power and grace that keeps you off balance … but in the best way possible. The Seña 2022 is striking from the start, thanks to its floral intensity, but what keeps your interest, and keeps you pouring, is the handling of the tannins — so polished they seem to melt away just as you notice them. The Rocas de Seña brings surprising depth for a second wine, with cherry and wildflower threading through the experience and lavender and citrus playing with and against each other with every sip.
THE STORY: For passionate collectors, one name towers above all others when it comes to Chile: Seña, the path-breaking estate from legends Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick that almost single-handedly put an entire nation on the world stage. The pair spent four years searching for the ideal terroir before finally landing on Chile's Valle de Aconcagua in 1995. The defining moment came in 2004, in an event rivaling the "Judgment of Paris" for historical significance, when a blind tasting pitting Viñedo Chadwick and Seña against Super-Tuscans and Bordeaux First Growths saw the 2000 Viñedo Chadwick emerge the winner, stunning everyone in attendance. When Mondavi first showed up in Chile in 1991, people thought he'd lost his mind. The ambition from the start was to “make great wines equal to the greatest wines in the world,” he said. “And everybody said it was impossible." Well, no one’s laughing now.
WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH: Bold wines like the two Chadwicks and the Seña 2022 call for bold flavors — in this case, Korean galbi, Moroccan tagine with lamb and apricots, or a Thai beef massaman curry. The Rocas de Seña, with its top notes and citrus, works beautifully with a lomo saltado, a lamb biryani, or a cochinita pibil.
FUN FACT: Before becoming a revered vineyard, the land at Puente Alto was Eduardo Chadwick's family polo field. He had to secure his father's blessing before being allowed to turn it into a vineyard.
