SANTA TERESA 1796 RUM
TEELING CASK FINISH

VENEZUELA

3, 2, 1 ...

We’re not counting down, we’re giving you the relevant numbers to understand what makes this new rum from the venerated Venezuelan producer, Santa Teresa 1796, one of our favorites, so special.

3 = the number of times this maker has aged its latest release.

2 = the number of types of casks used — a first for Santa Teresa's vaunted Cask Finish Series, with traditional American white oak starting off the maturation and European oak finishing it.

As for 1, we mean that to say — this is 1 of 1. A rum so singular and distinctive that it will have you racking your brain to come up with precedents. But there are none, because this tastes like nothing else out there right now.

Oh, and I’ve got another number for you: 50. That’s all it costs to secure a bottle — $50, a phenomenal deal for a spirit of this quality and character, and one that should have you thinking about laying in for multiple bottles, both for yourself and your bar car and to gift to colleagues and friends.

It took us all of one nosing to fall for its delicate, sophisticated aromatics. We loved the subtle interplay of malt and spice notes — a clear call-out to those Irish whiskey casks. Citrus emerges next, candied grapefruit peel mixing and mingling with dates and nuts, before the vanilla and wood notes come forward and begin to build. The Teeling casks have added rich, rounded bottom notes, along with a background of subtle spice that carries you to and through the well-tended finish.
As vital as those casks are to its flavor and texture, we simply have to talk about their base spirit — the world’s first triple-aged rum -- which is the end result of a slow and complex process of production.

Santa Teresa 1796 employs a solera system borrowed from Spanish sherry production. In the distillery, four rows of hogshead barrels cascade rum from top to bottom, never fully emptying, always replenishing. Every bottle contains some of the original "Ron Madre," which means every bottle has a DNA that goes back more than — speaking again of numbers — nearly 35 years.

Sorry — can’t resist — a final number for you: 5.

I refer, here, to the owner, Alberto C. Vollmer, who represents the fifth generation of his family dedicated to Venezuelan rum production.

To drink this extraordinary rum, though, you might guess that he was the 10th, or the 15th. That’s how soulful and profound this is, and how much it seems to connect you to something ancient and deep.

Secure yours today, and prepare yourselves for many nights to come of sweet sipping indulgence.
