The Bottling: If you didn't already know just how much Royal Salute is synonymous with luxury culture, this bottling comes as proof: a tribute, broadly, to polo, the "sport of kings," and, more specifically, to Miami, site of some of the most renowned polo clubs in the world and a regular destination for jet-setters from across the globe. The coral pink porcelain flagon, channeling Michael Mann's neo-noir "Miami Vice," would be at home in any one of countless, pulsing hotspots up and down South Beach.
The Story: Don’t let the flamboyance of the bottle fool you: this is the result of rigorous, painstaking craft. Produced at Strathisla Distillery, in Keith, Moray, the oldest working distillery in the Scottish Highlands, Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and the Royal Salute crew have created a powerful, complex 80 proof whisky that, echoing the bottle design, manages also to be delicately fragrant, expressive, and full of finesse.
Our Tasting Notes: The nose delivers everything you'd hope a coral-pink bottle would: a lushly tropical experience, with notes of honey blossom and ripe, juicy pears, and vanilla pastel de nata, and, in the background, whispers of chocolate marzipan and soft cinnamon. The palate is rich and vivid and indulgent, and you'll savor the vivid, expressive notes of apricot, pear, and lemon curd, and, trailing these (and carrying you to the finish), hints of milk chocolate and gingerbread. About that finish: we were struck, again and again, by just how silken and complex it is.
ABV: 40% (80 proof).
Fun Fact: Many a producer has claimed a magisterial lineage, but Royal Salute actually has the receipts: it was created to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1953.
