OUR TASTING NOTES: Taken together, the five bottles amount to a grand tour of rum’s great styles, from Jamaican funk to pure cane juice. The Caroni is an absolute tour de force of rum-making: explosive, aromatic, and jaw-droppingly intense, summoning, at different points in the almost overwhelming drinking experience, notes of tar, petrol, and burnt sugar. It leaves its imprint on you, in the best way possible. The Long Pond is a quintessentially island rum; it transports you to the tropics with overripe banana, grilled pineapple, and a resonant, damp-wood funk. The Uitvlugt is dark and oily, all prunes and tobacco and old leather, with a sly undercurrent of dark cocoa underneath. The Savanna edges at time towards a great single malt, with its echoes of candied citrus, an almost Islay whisper of smoke, and, on the finish, a beguiling hint of olive. The Simon is inarguably the most delicate of the five; we loved its brightness and vibrance, and the way it weaves its notes of lime, green apple, and white flowers.

FUN FACT: Rum aged in the tropics matures roughly twice as fast as spirit produced in a more temperate climate, so when you see a number like 16 (as in the case of the Savanna 2003), it counts for a whole lot more than what the number says on the bottle.
