MONYMUSK 2012 & ASSEMBLAGE #01

Our good friends over at Rest & Be Thankful aren't just bottling fantastic single malts; they also happen to be putting out some of the best rums on the planet right now.
Last month we brought you their proof-packing duo of Bruichladdich single malts, and today we're proud to report we've secured an allocation of two of the most sought-after rums in the market!
I'm speaking of Assemblage #01, the first iteration of what is expected to be a running, limited-edition series, and Monymusk 2012, which retailers across the globe just can't seem to stock fast enough.
Assemblage #01 is a blend of — count 'em — five different rums from Jamaica, all purchased there and brought to Scotland for maturation. You'll recognize some enticing names (and some intriguing age statements, too) in the roster of rums that make up the mix: a 2005 New Yarmouth Pot Still Rum; a 2005 Long Pond Pot Still Rum; a 2007 Clarendon Estate Column and Pot Still Rum; and a 2008 Pot Still Rum that was distilled at Lluidas Vale, Jamaica.
Like all Rest & Be Thankful releases, this is small batch (just over 5,000 bottles produced) and single cask, free of any additives and colorings, and un-chill filtered so as not to mask the natural character of the aged spirit.
On the nose, we found it to be a characteristically Jamaican rum, with rich, explosive aromatics that carried on through to that first sip and even to the long, gentle finish. Like many of the best rums from that idyllic island, it's fruit-forward, but in a controlled way that never, ever descends into the cloying, in part because the flavors are so beautifully balanced by the gentle, supporting spices.
As for the Monymusk 2012: this is a blend of, yes, 24 barrels of pot still rum distilled from sugarcane molasses at Monymusk's Clarendon distillery, all of them bearing the MDR distillery marque, a mark of high-end distinction. They were matured in American oak barrels for 9 years and the final product was bottled at 92 proof.
This is a deeply aromatic rum, with well-developed, expressive notes of roasted pineapple, burnt vanilla, passionfruit — a taste, truly, like none other in the world of rum right now. And a rum that plays surprisingly well with others (it's a superlative cocktail mixer) but can more than hold its own as a smooth slow-sipper that you can enjoy throughout the night.
