RENIERI 100-PT BRUNELLO SET

TUSCANY, ITALY

WHY BUY: Renieri’s 2010 Brunello Riserva and 2015 Brunello - two benchmark, 100-pt. wines, from historic vintages - in a new, one-off collectible set for $50 OFF. And they’ve both entered the prime of their drinking windows. These are two of the great vintages of the past few decades, spoken of in the same breath as the legendary Brunello vintage of 1997, and the years they've spent in bottle and in the cellar have made them ready to open and optimally opulent.

BONUS BUYS: For your everyday drinking pleasure, we’re also bringing you a 97-point Brunello at $65 to a pair of Chianti Classicos starting at $18, that will have you shaking your head in wonder at how winemaker Marco Bacci manages to deliver so much for so little.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: James Suckling awarded both wines a perfect 100 points, calling the 2010 Riserva "breathtaking." The 2015 went even further, earning the No. 2 position in his Top 100 Wines of 2019 and a rare adjective for Suckling: “otherworldly.” Suckling was taken, too, with the 2021 Brunello, which he hailed, in a 97-point review, for the "purity" of its Sangiovese and "firm tannins that run the length of the wine."

OUR TASTING NOTES: Sangiovese from the high slopes of Montalcino can sometimes be a loud talker, but not the two in this boxed set; they’re insinuating, charming, and altogether hard to resist. Pour them into the glass, and close your eyes, and see if you aren’t able to summon a Tuscan kitchen in late afternoon. The aromatics are as evocative as they are persistent, with notes of dried cherry, pipe tobacco, dried herbs, and, in both, a little note of espresso in the background. But at some level, it’s almost churlish to try to parse the noses on these; just settle back and let them take you places. The 2010 has had plenty of time to settle, and is drinking gorgeously, with resonance, depth, and a length that refuses to tail off. The 2015 is the more animated of the two, with striking energy for its age and a freshness that hardly seems possible; it’s plush in the middle, and keeps revealing itself as it goes: new aspects, new colorations. The 2020 and 2021 are the bright-eyed younger siblings, pomegranate and sour cherry, eager for the table tonight. And the Chianti Classicos, at their prices, are savory and red-fruited and perfect for a plate of pasta or pizza.

THE STORY: Marco Bacci, the winemaker and owner, takes a special kind of pride in making wines that belong in far more expensive company, and then, unaccountably, declining to charge you for the pleasure. His Montalcino estate sits on complicated volcanic soil, a patch of land shot through with stone and clay. Bacci insists upon harvesting the grapes by hand, and vinifies slowly and meticulously, plot by plot. The world does not lack for great wines, or for great wine values. But great wines that are also great values, these are vanishingly rare, and that’s what makes Bacci such a gift to wine lovers.

WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH: The Brunellos calls for roasted meats of any kind: a bistecca alla fiorentina, perhaps, or a rich and lusty wild boar ragù, or even just a meaty wedge of aged pecorino. The Chianti Classicos are just the wines to reach for when you’ve got a bowl of marinara simmering on the stove.

FUN FACT: The 2015 vintage produced eleven perfect Brunellos in James Suckling's tastings, and Renieri was deemed no. 2 of the year.
