REMY MARTIN 300 YEAR ANNIVERSARY COUPE

COGNAC, FRANCE

Why Buy: If Cognac is the drink of kings and conquerors — Louis XIII was a fan, as was Napoleon — then you could say that Rémy Martin is the drink of stars. Jeremy Renner has been a brand ambassador, the director David LaChapelle created a bottle label, and not one but two Who-men, Pete Townshend and Roger Entwistle, gave the brand a shout-out on their solo albums. But star power isn't why we love it. We love it because Rémy has been making Cognac since half a century before the U.S. became the U.S. It knows a thing or two or three about turning Champagne into a brandy of exquisite complexity and smoothness. And this  300th anniversary bottling is both cause for celebration and delicious proof of what continuity, pedigree, and tradition brings.

The Story: Made with a perpetual reserve of eaux-de-vies sourced exclusively from Grande Champagne, in the very heart of the Cognac region — a terroir renowned for the aromatics of its grapes — the Cognac was specially blended by Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau and aged in Rémy's famed cellars in Merpins. What makes this cellar special is not that it houses the largest collection of eaux-de-vie in the world, but that it is a cellar made up of many smaller cellars, each with distinct pockets of temperature and humidity that enable the Cognacs — stored in French Limousin casks — to age in subtle, unique ways.

The Cellar Master: Loiseau took the position in 2014 (becoming just the 7th in the history of the house, and the youngest ever), and the the Cognacs he has produced have been of a notably higher caliber, with greater definition and complexity, and even more of the Rémy smoothness.

The Bottle: Each handcrafted decanter (each numbered and sealed with a muzzle that features the company's signature centaur) is presented in a bespoke wooden case containing a numbered certificate, a special note from the Cellar Master, and a QR code.

Our Tasting Notes: It opens radiantly, with aromas of candied orange, passion fruit, white flowers, and underneath these alluring top notes, sandalwood, leather, and spice. The candied orange and passion fruit that were teased on the nose are embodied on the palate, which is vivid and rich, and which seems to proceed in waves, with an array of tropical fruits, figs, and nuts all creating an impression of amplitude. The finish is quintessentially Rémy — long and sustained, with a richness that doesn't flag.

Fun Fact: Rémy Martin is the only Cognac producer whose founder was a winemaker.
