With a Rioja wine clinching the #1 spot on last year's Wine Spectator Top Wines of the Year, there's no denying this historic region has secured its place among the great wine regions of the world. There are few wineries within Rioja that carry the heritage and prestige of R. López de Heredia. Wine Spectator’s Thomas Matthew holds that “the wines of R. López de Heredia define traditional Rioja and...set the standards by which the region’s modern reds must be judged.” While Bordeaux and Napa often release their top wines with the expectation that collectors will continue to age the wines over many more years, Reserva and Gran Reserva Rioja tend to be released when already far further along in their evolution—and thus represent some of the best value in the world of fine wine. Consider today’s R. López de Heredia 2009 Viña Bosconia Reserva: a 96-point, 12-year-old wine for sub-$40! We’re thrilled to have sourced an allocation of this stunning wine for our customers today.

The old adage “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” seems especially apt when one considers the nearly 150-year history of the bodega, in which the vineyard and winemaking process remain remarkably unchanged. López de Heredia is run today by fourth generation María José López de Heredia, who oversees all aspects of production. Grapes for Viña Bosconia are sourced from the family’s 37-acre ‘El Bosque’ vineyard, located near the Ebro River with mixed clay and limestone soils. Tradition is king here, and that philosophy carries through to the winery. Fermentation takes place in large oak vats, some of which are more than 100 years old. After fermentation, the wines age in American oak barrels for a minimum of 3 to 10 years. Bottle aging follows for a minimum of 3 years for Crianzas and 10 years for Gran Reservas.

The 2009 Viña Bosconia Reserva is composed of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano and Mazuelo. The wine aged five years in 225L American oak barrels, handmade by the López de Heredia coopers, and spent four additional years in bottle before release. The nose is rich with hints of cherry, cranberry, leather, tobacco, and baking spices; the flavors and tannins on the palate are incredibly integrated and the finish seems to go on and on.
