When it comes to red wine, there may be nothing more exciting than the revolution happening in Portugal. Having a plethora of indigenous grapes, centuries of winemaking knowledge and amazing climate and terroir, the resurgence began in the 1980s as Portugal rebuilt its neglected wine infrastructure – and the investment is paying off, especially when it comes to red wine. Traditionally considered rough and tannic, a transformation has occurred for Portuguese reds, with the top estates now producing some of the world’s boldest yet elegant styles, all while overdelivering on price point and offering outstanding value. One of the leaders of this investment is Sogrape Vinhos, whose portfolio includes the iconic, $400+ Barca Velha of Casa Ferreirinha in Douro, and one of their first priorities was the region of Dao. Recognizing the potential for producing outstanding red wine with local varieties, Sogrape acquired Quinta Dos Carvalhais in 1988, which has since become the flagship estate of Dao and one of the leading producers in all of Portugal. It is the single-variety Touriga Nacional, often compared to Cabernet Sauvignon and an indigenous grape originating in Dao, that represents their greatest expression. Today we are thrilled to offer their newly released 2015, 100% Touriga Nacional, which is only produced in exceptional vintages.
Located in the heart of the region, Quinta Dos Carvalhais and its 50 hectares of vineyards lie on a plateau between two mountain ranges, the Serra da Estrela to the east and the Serra do Caramulo to the west. With a temperate climate and sandy, well-drained soils on top of granite rock, the local variety Touriga Nacional thrives. One of the principal components of Port wine, Touriga Nacional is considered one of Portugal’s finest varieties, if not its best, and beginning in 1990, Quinta Dos Carvalhais started perfecting this outstanding expression. Longtime winemaker Manuel Vieria, bringing innovation and experience from Casa Ferreirinha and Barca Velha, has passed the torch to his protégé Beatriz Cabral de Almeida with the understanding that only in exceptional vintages the single-variety Touriga Nacional is to be produced.
Harvested in small batches from sustainable vineyards, Beatriz remains rigorous in the estate’s standards in selecting only the finest fruit and vinifying the small batches separately. With intense flavors balanced by finesse and elegance, this is an outstanding representation of the great quality of the 2015 vintage. Aged for 12 months in new and used French oak, the wine has immense structure and body, with concentrated flavors of ripened black and red fruit. From its enticing floral aromatics to its complex and persistent finish, this is a wine to be enjoyed over the next few decades. For up to 25% off, which brings the wine to under $30 a bottle, and with limited quantity available, I would suggest acting quickly on this cellar-worthy, super-premium Portuguese red!
