QUINTA DO VESUVIO

DOURO VALLEY, PORTUGAL

Portugal continues to be a hot ticket for value-minded travelers, and its soulful reds continue to represent some of the most fantastic deals in the world of wine.

Case in point?

Today's tantalizing trio from the Symington Family portfolio — the 95-point Quinta do Vesúvio DOC Douro Red 2015, the 91-point Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) 2019, and the as-yet-unrated Comboio do Douro Red 2019.

What makes them especially irresistible to us and the reason we keep returning to the well — is our faith in the producer: in the conscientiousness of their approach.

The Symington Family vineyards are sustainably managed with minimum intervention, and they maintain the largest area of organic vineyard in northern Portugal. The site belongs to the famed Quinta do Ataíde — a unique patch of earth, with a loamier soil than that of the rest of the Douro and growing conditions that are ideal for the production of high-quality wine. No herbicides are used (or needed), and the dryness of the micro-climate limits competing (and potentially damaging) vegetation.

The 2015 Quinta do Vesúvio aged for 16 months in wood, giving the wine, Wine Enthusiast wrote, in its 95-point rave, an "opulent" mouthfeel and "plenty of tannic structure. Rich blackberry flavors have a strongly mineral texture that will allow this wine to age well."

The  2019 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is also destined to reward a little patience — a sentiment shared by Wine Advocate. Matured for eight months in used French oak, this powerful red, the publication wrote, in a 91-point review lavish with detail, is "spicy, fresh and beautifully constructed," a wine of "fine depth, better intensity, and a backbone."

When you buy a Symington Family wine, you are supporting more than a company; you are affirming an ethos, one that honors tradition, time-honored methods, and an acknowledgment of the enduring power of terroir.

We've been fans of theirs for years, and marvel, year in and year out, at the consistency, quality, and, yes, ageability of these powerful, value-laden reds.

They're made for ordering by the case or cases, and we hope you'll take advantage of this unique opportunity to buy low and reap the enormous benefits down the road.
