QUINTA DAS CARVALHAS
DOURO VALLEY, PORTUGAL
When it comes to wine and adventure, there may not be a better place to start than the Douro Valley in Portugal. A drive into the heart of the Valley is an unforgettable experience in itself—it can easily take 30 minutes to travel a single mile as you twist and turn along the narrow mountainside roads. The Douro Valley boasts some of the steepest vineyard slopes in the world, full of indigenous grapes grown on century-old vines. While Port is celebrated worldwide, Portugal’s dry reds have been getting more and more attention: these wines exemplify power and finesse, all while providing new and complex flavors for engaged explorers. As one of the “global leaders when it comes to value,” it’s easier than ever to bring the Portuguese wine experience to your table at home (Wine Spectator). Today’s lineup comes from one of the Valley’s most prestigious estates, Quinta das Carvalhas, and includes two outstanding values along with two ageworthy, beautifully complex gems. All the wines far over deliver their modest price points—it’s time to stock up!
The center of the Douro Valley is home to this striking property, the flagship estate of one of Portugal’s oldest wine companies, Real Companhia Velha. Located on an entire hillside facing the Douro River, Quinta das Carvalhas traces its vineyards back to 1759. The estate vineyards span 600 hectares and some vines are more than 100 years old. Ten varieties are currently planted, with most of the land devoted to Touriga Nacional. Vines are located at various altitudes and as you move up in elevation, slopes become so steep that vineyard terraces are mandated, creating an amphitheater of jaw-droppingly beautiful vineyard slopes.
The 2018 Reserva Douro is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz that offers up a profile of red fruit, plum, and spice with firm tannins. The 2016 Touriga Nacional unveils in the glass with notes of cranberry, graphite, and chocolate, all held together by soft tannins and a core of fresh acidity. The grape Tinta Francisca is known for its intense aromatics, and is often used in blends to add a perfumed and elegant character. Produced and bottled as a single-varietal wine, the 2016 Tinta Francisca boasts stunning floral aromatics interwoven with notes of raspberry, orange zest, baking spice, and cedar. And finally, the old vines 2017 Vinhas Velhas comes from a field-blend vineyard that is more than 80 years old. The wine aged 18 months in French oak and boasts a velvety texture along with interwoven flavors of blackberry compote, tea leaves, baking spice, and stony minerality. Each of these wines showcase the brilliant Douro terroir with precision. Secure your order today!
