QUINTA DAS CARVALHAS
DOURO, PORTUGAL
In our lives, aging is as unforgiving as it is unavoidable, but in the world of wine collecting, it’s what we all seek: expressions of maturity and authority that reveal their charms and dimensions only after years and years in the bottle.
And today, we bring you a pair of ports that wear their age with absolute majesty:
It will probably come as no surprise to you that both of these wines hail from the legendary Quinta das Carvalhas, the darling of the Douro Valley.
These are not wines you sip. They’re wines you surrender to.
Elegant structure, unfathomable depth, transportive beauty, characterful complexity, silken mouthfeel … and that elusive quality — that comes partly but not only from terroir — that connects you to time and place.
Reviewing the 40 Year, Wine Spectator was sent into raptures. "A stunner,” it wrote, "vibrant and gently mulled, [with] a live wire of acidity pierces through, [and] a hint of ginger ganache echoing at the very end."
Wine Enthusiast was no less enamored of the 80 Year, "powered by old wood aroma and intense concentration” to "achieve a maturity that is dramatic. Drink this great wine now.”
As much of a rave of a review as that is, the backstory might be better. This is the first edition of this 80 Year, which, as I already mentioned, is built from ports from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The exact specs of this blend are frankly mind-blowing:
Hence, the name — the Impressionist Edition, both to highlight the time it pays homage to and the experience the final product delivers, namely, a complexity so profound that each sip seems different from the one before it.
To understand this estate and its life-affirming (and even life-changing) ports, you have to understand the terroir, and, more specifically, the high-elevation, steep-banked terraces, which provide an ideal degree of stress on the vines. The optimal dry heat of the Douro does the same to the grapes.
Beyond the vineyard, winemaking at Carvalhas follows the estate's centuries-old methods: the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed by foot, fermented in traditional cement lagares, and aged in oak.
When you buy a Quinta das Carvalhas port, you’re buying more than a beautiful, memorable wine: you’re buying history, tradition, and a link to the old ways.
And in a world in which our connections to the past are rapidly dwindling, that amounts, in our book, to something almost priceless.
