QUEST'S END WIZARD IRISH WHISKEY
IRELAND
In certain circles, the highest compliment you can pay a movie, a book, a game is to say that its world-building is elite.
And Quest's End's Wizard Irish Whiskey is world-building of a kind we simply don't ever see in the whiskey space (or in any space, for that matter), making it the perfect spirit for a night of drinking and gaming and ditching reality for a good long while.
Quest's End is the invention of a company called Find Familiar Spirits, co-founded by the actor Matthew Lillard (Scream, Scooby-Doo), who has brought a rich sense of story to the project. Accordingly, each release is based on a famous character class in fantasy gaming, with the whiskey blended to match the traits and nuances of that character.
We'll get to those details in just a sec …
But just so you know: we wouldn't be telling you about its ability to take you away from this world and into one more magical and wondrous if it wasn't also a great single malt, and one that can stand entirely on its quality.
And it can. And it does. This is a 2017 bottling that has spent all its nine years since then in bourbon barrels (and in a warehouse that sits just 300 feet from ocean cliffs).
The resultant single malt is velvety and rich and pretty much irresistible.
The nose is buttery and warm and almost homey, with a honeyed grain character that gives way to something faintly saline — a result, no doubt, of Quest’s End’s warehouse to the Atlantic. On the palate, vanilla and soft orchard fruit settle in first; then comes a briny note that surfaces from the depths, followed by a one-two of salt and sweetness that play with and against one another all the way to the gentle, smooth finish.
Now, about that world-building …
The presiding spirit here is Cerelaiss, a 580-year-old gnome wizard dispatched by the God of Light to help a fallen deity reconnect with her power ... though what Cerelaiss actually wants (conflict, tension, drama!) is tea, a good book, and to be left alone.
Each bottle is decorated with a glow-in-the-dark emblem, along with spell symbols, the next serialized chapter of Dawn of the Unbound God written by best-selling fantasy author Andrea Stewarts, and custom hit-point counter down the side. As for Tyler Jacobson's artwork, it’s more than just a bottle design; it contains so much character and setting and detail that we could spend an entire email just unpacking it all.
Of course, at the end of the day, what matters most is not the characters who drive the story but the character of the juice.
And this one has that, and in abundance.
You’re going to have fun with this one, folks. We can’t wait to hear all your stories. But hurry; this one won’t stick around here for long.
