The Story: Conceived as an homage to one of the greatest Champagne widows, Jeanne Alexandrine Louise Pommery, who assumed control of this grand estate when her husband, Alexandre, died, and turned a minor effort into a major statement, this cuvée is as powerful and alive as she was. It is a major achievement, and a reminder of the majestic greatness of this house, now in its 165th year: an estate that never cuts corners, and always honors both terroir and the laborious, time-honored fundamentals of the Champagne-making process.
The Specs: The cuvée was produced with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from the Grands Cru of Avize, Cramant, and Aÿ. Chardonnay predominates, and drives the wine – and a particularly mineral Chardonnay at that, we might add. It was matured for 10 years in the house's famed gypsum quarries.
Our Tasting Notes: Aromatically delicate, with gorgeous notes of brioche, lemon, caramel, and wisps of smoke, it opens out into a medium-to-full bodied palate that, for all its surprising size and texture, is bright and crisp and focused. There is a maturity here that encourages slow sipping and contemplation.

Fun Fact: Upon her death, in 1890, Madame Pommery was accorded a state funeral, a rare honor for a woman.
What to Pair It With: Oysters on the half shell; shrimp risotto; quiche; scalloped potatoes; chicken in mushroom cream sauce.
