PODERI LUIGI EINAUDI

PIEDMONT, ITALY

If it's been a while since you've eased back the cork on a Barolo from Poderi Luigi Einaudi, you owe it to yourself to renew your acquaintance. Third-generation winemaker Matteo Sardagna has taken over the controls of this great estate, the oldest producer in Dogliani, and the result has been nothing short of remarkable: a sharp turn toward classicism that has brought markedly more precision, structure, and distinction. And with that, a potential for aging that has turned these now-vastly underrated wines into collectibles.

We've just secured allocations of five from their stellar portfolio, including four brilliant Barolos:

  • their 94-point Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi 2019, which Wine Spectator hailed for its "concentrated fruit," "dense texture," and "tannic structure"

  • their 94-point Barolo Bussia 2019, which Decanter called "savory," "elegant," and "delicious," with "amazing tension on the finish"

  •  their 93-point Barolo DOCG Cannubi 2018 – an "effortless, gracious" wine, wrote Vinous, with "expressive aromatics" and "creamy, exquisitely layered Cannubi red-tone fruit”

  • and their 93-point Barolo "Ludo,” a “bright and well-delineated” expression, in the words of Wine Spectator

Einaudi is also renowned for its delicious Dolcettos, and their 92-point Dolcetto Di Dogliani DOCG 2021 is a textbook expression; James Suckling singled it out for its "fresh and bright" profile and "crisp finish."

Decanter has explored the transformation of Einaudi under Sardagna, and reports that the 126-year old estate now favors "long fermentations, submerged cap maceration, [and] malolactic fermentation in cement and aging in cask." Significant changes, all, but the decision that has had perhaps the most profound effect has been to give his wines a more traditional 30 months of aging.

In our tastings, we were struck immediately by the profile of the new Einaudi, and reveled in the clarity and balance of these wines, which, we hasten to add, still retain the characteristic heft, depth, and length of great Barolos.

We hope you find as much pleasure in them as we did, and that you'll keep your eye on this estate on the rise.

And remember: we always buy and source direct, so rest assured – your wines will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance.
