‘The idea of Rare, as its name says, is to produce limited quantities in singular and exceptional vintages,’ said Émilien Boutillat, chief winemaker for both Rare and Piper-Heidsieck Champagnes. ‘It is rare because of the quantity, of the frequency and the singularity of each vintage that we produce.’ The 2013 vintage is only the 13th release of Rare since the debut of this prestige cuvée from the 1976 vintage in 1985. The sleeper 2013 vintage was outstanding for Champagne, producing grapes of remarkable quality and the 2013 Piper-Heidsieck Rare captures the essence of this exceptional year, offering a unique and memorable experience.

One particularity that sets Rare apart is its large proportion of Chardonnay, giving this golden potion a palpable energetic thread of brine and salinity. It was when we tasted this gem, which was clean and crisp whilst simultaneously creamy with citrus and toast, that we realized it was a true work of art in the bottle. The high percentage of Chardonnay speaks to its enormous aging potential which Decanter suggests will extend through 2040.
