PIO CESARE

PIEDMONT, ITALY 2019

Why Buy: A stunning lineup of high-scoring 2019 Barbarescos and Barolos from one of the world's most historic and prestigious estates — the legendary Pio Cesare, maker of some of the most pure, precise, age-worthy Nebbiolos in the world. For one week, we're offering mix-and-match pricing on these beauts, including the 97-point, single-vineyard ‘Il Bricco’ Barbaresco and a trio of Barolo gems: the 96-point ‘Mosconi,’ the 95-point Barbaresco Pio DOCG, and the 95-point Barolo DOCG.

What They're Saying: "Fantastic depth of fruit and layers of tannins," James Suckling gushed over the Barbaresco Il Bricco, going on to write: "so deep and focused, with great length and structure ... terroir and gravitas." Jeb Dunnuck's review of the Mosconi was a paean to its many virtues: "great balance ... fine, ripe tannins and a note of salty mineral earth ... fresh and persistent [and] long on the palate." The Barbaresco Pio earned Suckling's admiration and praise; he called it a "full and structured" wine with a "solid core of fruit" and "excellent length." As for the Barolo DOCG, Owen Bargreen was sent into swoons: "very light on its feet and highly nuanced," he wrote, "with beautiful damp soil notes."

The Story: Though traditionally Pio Cesare blended grapes from different vineyards across the region to produce its magnificent Barolos and Barbarescos, warming weather enabled the estate to focus, in recent years, on single-vineyard marques, which have resulted in some of the most stunning wines they have ever produced. To drink these single-vineyard wines is to experience the true character of Piedmontese terroir, though the late, legendary winemaker Pio Boffa was always quick to remind his audience that blending grapes from multiple vineyards by no means indicates a lesser wine — that blending is an art.

Our Tasting Notes: Fifth-generation winemaker Federica Rosy Boffa and her cousin, Cesare Benvenuto, have proven to be as expert at the controls as the estate's many fans around the world could have hoped. The winemaking remains as elegant and focused as ever, with charm to spare and an absolute lack of overstatement that comes across, to us, like nothing so much as wisdom.

Fun Fact: Federica Boffa was just 23 when she assumed command of the winery, in 2021, but she was no parvenu; her father had literally raised her in the vineyard and in the cellar.
