What They're Saying: Jeb Dunnuck, in a 98-point paean to the "outstanding and seductive" Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Rennina, extolled its "smoldering aromas," "refined tannins," "mouthwatering, seamless acidity," and "long-lasting finish." He was also enamored of the 97-point Brunello di Montalcino, a "graceful" wine with "refined tannins, even, mouthwatering acidity, and a salty finish. It keeps you coming back for more." Monica Larner, weighing in on the Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille, was bowled over, awarding 97+ points and hailing its "finely chiseled quality, with direct and lifted fruit," "delicate mineral notes of crushed stone," and "textural deliciousness, thanks to the natural ripeness and concentration of the fruit."

Our Tasting Notes: The 2019 vintage was a winemaker's dream in Montalcino — a long growing season with ideal conditions yielding grapes of perfect balance and concentration. GAJA's meticulous approach in the vineyard is matched only by their precision in the cellar. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino presents a complex bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it shows remarkable freshness and depth, with fine-grained tannins and a persistent, mineral-driven finish. The Rennina, sourced from a single-vineyard plot, offers a more intense aromatic profile, with notes of black cherry, violet, and a touch of licorice. It's full-bodied yet elegant, with a silken texture and a long, nuanced finish that hints at its aging potential. The single-vineyard Sugarille, true to its reputation, shows a more powerful character. Aromas of dark plum, blackberry, and savory spices lead to a structured palate with firm tannins and a deep core of fruit. The finish is long and complex, suggesting decades of evolution ahead. All three wines showcase the purity and energy that define this stellar vintage, with a harmonious balance of fruit, acidity, and tannin that is the hallmark of great Brunello.

The Story: Angelo Gaja, the current patriarch, transformed not just his family's estate, which was founded in 1859, but the entire landscape of wine in Italy when he took the reins of the estate in the early 1960s. His controversial methods, from the use of barriques to his reliance on single-vineyard expressions, once raised eyebrows throughout Piedmont; today, the only thing the Piedmontese are raising are their glasses, in acknowledgment and praise of this enfant terrible-turned-prophet. In 1994, GAJA set its sights on Montalcino, acquiring Pieve Santa Restituta, an 86-hectare estate with roots stretching back to the 12th century. Situated at an altitude of 320-350 meters and blessed with a sun-drenched, windswept microclimate, it's proven an ideal parcel of land for the Gaja family to explore and transform and work its magic.
