PETROLO, TORRIONE, GALATRONA & 'BOGGINA C' CLASSICO RISERVA,

VALDARNO DI SOPRA

TUSCANY, ITALY 2020

In the wide world of wine, there may be no success story this century more stunning than that of Luca Sanjust and Petrolo.

After taking over the estate in 1993, Sanjust, an art world luminary, brought in some of the wine world’s top consultants, including Giulio Gambelli — a giant in Tuscany, renowned for his work with legacy estates Soldera and Montevertine — and Denis Durantou of Château L’Eglise-Clinet. Their efforts paid off immediately, as, almost overnight, the wines began to garner critical acclaim and chatter. They also became harder and harder to find, with high demand turning them into prized possessions — and Petrolo into a cult wine legend.

So, today's offer is the product of considerable and dogged effort over the months, and we couldn't be prouder of the hard work our team put in to make it happen. And we can't wait for you to dip into these three bottles, which represent some of the highlights of Petrolo's 2020 portfolio: the 97-point Valdarno di Sopra Galatrona; the 95-point Boggina C Classico Riserva; and their Torrione, a stunner of a value at 93 points and a best price of just under $32 a bottle.

Petrolo is located in Valdarno di Sopra, a region bordering Chianti Classico, historically recognized as one of the best wine-producing areas in all of Tuscany. When Sanjust took over, he discovered that the land was suited not just to Sangiovese, but also to the growing of French varietals.

In his mingling of French and Italian grapes, Sanjust emerged as a somewhat unorthodox figure in a region that adheres so faithfully to tradition. But no one, surely, can argue with the results.

Galatrona is the estate's headliner, and the 2020 vintage is, as The Wine Advocate described it, a "pure expression of organic Merlot." In our tastings, we were impressed both by its power and finesse, which surely will allow it to age for at least a decade. Suckling, in his 97-point rave, singled out its "extremely perfumed" nose of black fruits, violets, and crushed stones, its "refined and fresh" profile, and its "ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet that goes on for minutes."

Suckling was nearly as enthused about the Valdarno di Sopra Bòggina C, which, again, displays the customary Petrolo one-two of aromatics and length. "So perfumed and beautiful, with brightness," he wrote, in his 95-point review, going on to extol its "ultra-fine tannins and a long, persistent finish."

Last but not least, there is the Torrione, made primarily with Sangiovese (along with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). The Wine Advocate was absolutely on the money in calling it "highly accessible and enjoyable," an organic wine with a "linear approach and a pretty dusty note on the tannins." It'd be hard to find a more versatile table wine than this. Over the past few weeks, I paired it with a lamb shank and potatoes, with a hearty pasta Bolognese, and with a strapping plate of sausage and peppers.

Don't miss your chance to secure these exceptional and hard-to-find wines from one of Italy's greatest stars — order a case or two before our allocation is gone!
