A cult producer whose wines include “Tuscan icons” alongside such powerhouses as Sassicaia and Masseto, Petrolo still provides unbelievable value when compared to the price points of many of the big-name Super Tuscans on the market (Ian D’Agata, Vinous). The demand over the last few decades has been extraordinary, with the property’s rise in fame due to the efforts of owner Luca Sunjust. After taking over the estate in 1993, Sanjust immediately brought in some of the wine world’s top consultants, including Giulio Gambelli—a giant in Tuscany whose work at Soldera and Montevertine is renowned—as well as Denis Durantou of Chateau L’Eglise-Clinet. In no time, the wines of Petrolo became both highly acclaimed and hard to find, as the demand immediately made them rare, prized possessions. Fortunately we were able to secure an allocation of the newest vintage of Petrolo’s flagship wine, the 2017 Torrione, with a sub-$40 price point that is a steal!

Located in Valdorna di Sopra, historically recognized as one of the best wine-producing areas of Tuscany, the property of Petrolo was originally purchased by Sanjust’s family, with the first vines planted in 1947. A region bordering Chianti Classico, the quality of grapes now being produced there cemented its DOC status in 2011 and, unlike Bolgheri and Montalcino, maintains its sense of “rustic charm” (James Suckling). Moving from the artworld with his wife, Sanjust completely renovated the centuries-old farmhouse and discovered that the land provided excellent growing conditions for French varieties. Torrione marks the beginning of Petrolo’s quality revolution, a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from all of the estate’s vineyards. Located on soils of loam with rocky stratifications of schist, marl and sandstone, the property reflects Sanjust’s philosophy of biodiversity and natural balance within the vineyards and was certified organic in 2016. Dry farming and other sustainable farming practices have contributed to the estate’s well-earned reputation as a source of some of the purest fruit within Tuscany.

The 2017 Torrione is “potent and dense” and richer than a typical vintage, yet the wine maintains a seamless balance (Antonio Galloni, Vinous). Full on the palate, this Torrione has bountiful flavors of grilled herbs and licorice that wrap around a core of dark fruit, all accompanied by intense structure that will allow it to age for at least a decade. At less than $29 a bottle when you purchase six or more, this is one you’ll want to stock up with a case or two—before our allocation is gone.
