PENFOLDS

SOUTH AUSTRALIA & NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

Why Buy: Penfolds has long been synonymous with both exceptional quality and unerring consistency. It’s little wonder that collectors are given to scouring the secondary market for any and all product, from bottles of their Grange flagship (widely regarded as an Australian "first-growth") to their "border-crossing" expression Quantum to their Bin Series wines. And today we're thrilled to be able to bring you a slate of 9 from this legendary house — all from their current portfolio, all ready to open right now, and all destined, we believe, to age beautifully in the medium- and long-term.

The Story: Key to the success of the label, year after year, is that Penfolds is expert at blending across its various regional vineyard sites, both at home in Australia and beyond. Dave McIntrye, The Washington Post's longtime wine critic, refers to this as "Penfolds' no-borders, house-style philosophy." That philosophy might not be embraced in all corners of the wine world, but you can't argue with the results. Year after year, Penfolds has shown an uncanny ability to turn out wines of depth and intensity that are nevertheless nimble enough to dance on the palate. They also possess the characteristic length and smoothness that makes them so irresistibly easy to drink.

Our Tasting Notes: In Peter Gago, Penfolds has more than a wise and steady leader who has commanded the estate for more than three decades, and brought it a remarkable sense of continuity. It also has a gifted winemaker, one blessed with a world-class eye and palate. What was striking to us, in our recent tasting, is that, despite the various differences among these bottlings, there was a fascinating common denominator — namely, their enormous approachability and finesse: a remarkable achievement, given the wines' weight and texture.

Fun Fact: A bottle of the first vintage of Penfolds Grange Hermitage, a 1951 release, sold for nearly $40,000 in 2017, and even recent releases continue to command top dollar at auction.

What to Pair Them With: Designate the Grange, Quantum, and RWT for special occasion status; and let us assure you, a great time is guaranteed with these three, which seduce with their richness, softness, and runway-long finishes. As for the six "bin" wines, they are the ultimate in pairing when it comes to rich meats —  a juice-dripping grilled steak, a savory, double-cut pork chop, a lacquered whole duck or goose. ("Bin," by the way, refers to where in the cellars the wines are stored while they age, with the higher numbers connoting wines of more recent vintage.)

Our Guarantee: We always buy and source direct, so rest assured: your wines will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance. Take advantage of our Mix & Match pricing to secure your taste of these absolute beauties!
