PENDERYN DISTILLERY, ICONS OF WALES NO. 9, 'THE HEADLINER' LIMITED EDITION, SINGLE MALT WHISKY
PENDERYN, WALES
You speak; we listen.
After the rousing success of the 8th installment in Penderyn Distillery's "Icons of Wales" series, which we shared with you last summer, which followed the equally rousing success of the 7th installment the previous winter, we're back with the 9th installment:
The Headliner, a 92-proof, non-chill filtered single malt whisky matured in Jamaican rum and ruby port casks.
Penderyn has been on a breathtaking ascent of late. Over the past five years we have watched as this star of the whisky scene, launched in 2000, has evolved into a legit superstar. In that time, it has taken home more than 50 awards, including European Whisky of the Year at Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2020 and a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Awards that same year. Last year it added even more to its war chest, claiming three gold awards and 2 "Double Gold"s for five of their single malt whiskies.
What makes this Brecon Beacons distiller so good, and why do collectors around the globe eagerly await any new release?
Easy.
Their distillations are done in a custom-built copper pot, and the resultant single malts are among the most aromatic, complex, and powerful in the industry.
The Headliner is a marvelously characteristic example.
The nose is a heady mix of fruit (red berries, strawberries and cream, and cranberries) and spice (nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla), with a gentle note of oak that seamlessly knits them. That fruitiness extends to the palate, but here the characteristic note is of dried fruits, along with salted caramel, floral honey, and a light pop of black pepper. The initial sweetness of the finish fades into dryness, with a sustained note of fruit that carries you through to the end.
By the way, if you're wondering about the name, The Headliner … Each bottle in the series is intended to honor a key figure or myth in Welsh history, and this one was conceived as an homage to David Lloyd George, the social reformer who became Prime Minister (the only Welshman to do so). What is not generally known about Lloyd George, however, is that he created the premium whisky industry. Not intentionally — accidentally. His "3 years a day" rule — legislating that whisky had to be in cask for at least that length of time — brought an end to rogue distilling in Britain and birthed the age of better, matured whiskies.
Like this prized bottling, surely.
We're fortunate to have obtained a small allocation of it, so hurry to secure yours today!
