The Pelissero family has been cultivating vineyards in Treiso, in the heart of the Barbaresco DOCG appellation, for three generations, but they only started bottling estate grapes and selling wines under the Pelissero label in 1960. Today’s proprietor, Giorgio Pelissero, continues championing the family’s personal involvement in each step of the winemaking process and the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The 2015 Barbaresco Nubiola is incredibly finessed with striking intensity of flavor: mint, rose petal, and sweet red cherry intermingle on the palate and lead into a persistent finish that will keep you taking sip after sip. The 2015 vintage report from Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe Dogliani reports that “considering the great balance shown in the ripening data we can say without any shadow of doubt that all the conditions are in place for a truly great vintage: one to remember, like few others in history.” Pelissero has shown an impressive ability to craft good wines even when vintages have been difficult, but the 2015 showcases what can be accomplished with an excellent vintage. Pelissero produces three distinct Barbaresco wines: Vanotu, Tulin (formerly known as Annata), and Nubiola. The fruit for Nubiola is sourced from six tiny lots across the appellation and proved ideal in 2015. The wine is bold, elegant, and incredibly balanced and will likely drink well with minimal cellaring. With scores in the 90s and under $40 a bottle, this wine will undoubtedly impress recent Barbaresco converts and longtime collectors alike.
