This is something special, folks, and an offering that sold out (and quickly, at that) the past two years: the third release of Chateau Margaux's Pavillon Blanc Second Vin, which sings out with all the finesse, depth, balance and harmony that has made Margaux such a supernova.
It’s also just the fifth wine produced by this great house in five centuries.

Sourced from 50-year-old vines that yield just 15-20 hectoliters per hectare, this is winemaking at its most obsessively meticulous. In our recent tasting, we were struck by its exceptional purity and clarity, which set the varietal character of Sauvignon Blanc into sharp and vivid relief. On the nose, the immediate burst of fresh citrus gives way to something almost steely, priming you for the remarkable tension and energy on the palate, which itself paves the way for the finely etched finish.
It's drinking beautifully now, but promises to only gain in complexity over the next two to three years.
White wine isn't some new development at Margaux, by the way. It's a tradition that stretches all the way back to the early 18th century, when the estate released a wine called Château Margaux Vin Blanc de Sauvignon before that modulated into Pavillon Blanc in 1920.
This Pavillon Blanc Second Vin is the third wave in that evolution, and to our mind, and that of many other connoisseurs, the finest, benefitting as it does from a thoughtful aging program. The wine spends its maturation period in French oak barrels (25% new), half of them 500-liter demi-muids (which allow for gentler integration).
