In our line of work, we taste a lot of wine. Given that we all have our favorite regions and producers, when it comes to tasting new wines from less familiar regions, I’ll admit that it can be hard to be completely objective and taste without any preconceived notions. But once in while there is a wine that catches you off guard – one that makes you question what you might think you know about a place. What I’ve learned over the years is that every wine region has a handful of producers who push the envelope and move the overall standards of the region higher and higher. So today I am thrilled to offer something that just 5 years ago I never dreamed I would be excited about – 2015 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir from Martinborough, New Zealand.
There’s something magical going on here. This isn’t the powerful, high octane Pinot that you might find out of California, or the structured, rustic style found in the great wines of Burgundy. It’s also not the floral-yet-earthy style from Oregon - often described as a middle ground between the two. New Zealand, and especially Martinborough, has come into its own in recent years – producing dynamic wines of terroir so different than what is happening anywhere else in the world. The 2015 Palliser Estate Pinot Noir is all about the tension between refined elegance and concentration. The wine is subtle yet possess deep fruit, perfectly balanced by a floral lift. The stony silt loam overlaying ancient, free draining river gravel adds a mineral and savory character which complements the gentle notes of licorice, spice and smoke derived from the native yeasts in the vineyards. It’s not about one thing jumping out at you.  It’s the ethereal layers of subtle complexities that come in waves and makes this wine so special.
Palliser Estate is one of the pioneers to Martinborough. Recognizing the potential in the land that at the time was considered to be ideal for grazing sheep, vines were planted in the mid 1980’s with the first harvest done in 1989. With vines almost 30 years old and three decades of intimate work with the vines, it’s clear that the team at Palliser knows what they are doing in the vineyard and winery.

But don’t just take my word for it. Scoring an impressive 94 points from Wine Spectator, it seems that the Southern Hemisphere’s best kept secret is out. With only a total of 200 cases imported into the US, we secured as much as we could, but with pricing below $25 when you buy six or more bottle, we suggest acting quickly to secure your order!
