The Story: Orphan Barrel's base of operations is in tiny Tullahoma, Tennessee, but what makes this team so great is that they're passionate globe-trotters, lighting out across the world in search of one-off or forgotten barrels of rare and exquisite whiskeys, hidden away in the back of rick houses and storehouses. For this one, they turned to Teaninich Distillery, in the Scottish Highlands, overlooking the Cromary Firth. From its founding, in 1817, the distillery has been an important producer in the region, supplying whisky for many labels. Some of these whiskies never made it to bottle, and the Orphan team struck gold in several overlooked casks, which it later blended and matured in European oak.
Our Tasting Notes: Gorgeously textured, with hints of vanilla, red apple, honey, and mint beneath. That makes it a single malt to sit and linger over for hours, nosing the glass to savor its aromas of tangerine, poached pear, and dried herbs as you settle in for a good, long conversation with friends.
