There’s no producer that does a wine lifestyle brand quite like David Phinney, creator of Orin Swift - provocative, alluring, using minimal words and maximum impact. Exactly like the wines themselves. They’re voluptuous, seductive, in-your-face blends that seamlessly combine his “Midas touch” with grapes and his unparalleled creative genius into one of the most recognizable brands in the world of wine. His first two vintages of Zinfandel and Cabernet were produced in 1998 and 1999, but not until 2000 did he find himself center stage with the production of his claim to fame – a captivating, small batch blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet, Syrah, Petit Syrah and Charbono with a label portraying a dark image of a man in chains (based ‘The Little Prisoner’ by Francisco de Goya, depicting the atrocities of war between France and Spain) which he so aptly named The Prisoner. You may have heard of it. The buzz around his wines is palatable and extremely justified. It seems that every wine he touches turns to gold, from his highly-acclaimed Machete, Mercury Head and Papillon, his style is unmistakable - full-throttle, grandiose crowd-pleasers of extraordinary quality that wash over your taste buds with a wave of power and intensity, drawing you back like a moth to a flame.

Today’s offer is a rare treat – a debut release of the First Edition of Orin Swift’s ‘Eight Years in the Desert.’ Only produced in finite quantities and available for a limited time, this is an 8-bottle collection of hand-made, mixed-media labels or the same killer juice, presented in a custom made wine case, and is one of the most personal projects of David Phinney. In Phinney’s own words in a letter to his customers -

“As many of you know, the first commercial wine I made for Orin Swift was Zinfandel. But none of you have ever tried it. None of you have tried it because it was never bottled. I sold it on the bulk market. I would argue that Zinfandel may be the most difficult varietal to tame. But when you get it right it rewards you like no other. If winemaking is a series of challenges Zinfandel has them all in spades. So, in 2009 I took a break from Zinfandel and its challenges. It would end up being an eight-year break. Eight years in the desert. It was never if but when would we make Zinfandel again. That when is now.

Today is a big day. I am reunited with the varietal that got me started in the wine business and created Orin Swift…This project is by far the most personal of any I have undertaken…Nothing has been spared on this project. The tank is empty; everything was left on the field. This is literally blood sweat and tears.

So, with no further ado, we proudly give you 8 Years in the Desert. A blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah and small percentages of other red varietals.

Enjoy, Dave”
