OPUS ONE

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2023

Opus One rarely releases back vintages, but they just did for us, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Or more thrilled for you.

We’ve partnered with them to bring you this triumphant triumvirate:

  • the 2023 vintage, which earned 98 points from no fewer than four different critics: Wine Spectator, Decanter, Vinous, and Jeb Dunnuck.
  • the 99-point 2018 vintage, in 1.5L magnum
  • and the 97-point 2014 vintage.

As some of you know, mature Opus One is harder to find than … not a needle in a haystack, but harder to find, to be sure, than comparably aged bottles of most prestigious Napa Cabs. We don't often see the 2014 or the 2018 floating around the market the way we do with certain Harlan or Screaming Eagle vintages. You’ll seldom find these wines at auction houses, either.

The 2023 vintage is the new release, and the reception has been nothing less than resounding. Vinous called it “class personified" — a super-classic Opus of “lifted aromatics” and “exquisite finesse,” with red and purplish fruit woven into a fabric of remarkable cohesion.

Awarded a near-perfect 99 points from James Suckling at release (a wine of “balanced and refined” with tannins of exceptional polish), the 2018 vintage in magnum is hitting a perfect drinking window right now. The structure has settled, the dark fruit has gone a touch more savory, and what's emerging is the kind of integration that can’t be rushed, and that only time and more time can bring.

The 2014 vintage is showing optimally as well. Suckling called the aromatics “mesmerizing” — a wine, he said, with an almost Burgundian texture under all that big Napa fruit. Eleven years on, we found it to be deeply expressive, marvelously finesse, and with a lingering, Old World elegance.

And to speak, again, of time and what it brings:

This 1978 Bordeaux-meets-Napa partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi was founded to prove that California could play on the same field as the great Médoc estates. It has done that, and more.

Forty-plus vintages later, there’s not a serious wine collector who doesn’t know Opus … and not one who isn’t in its thrall.

We can’t wait for you to taste these for yourself, and hope you’ll take full advantage of this rare and wonderful offer.
