The Story: The tale of Opus One has been told many a time, but what’s most essential to bear in mind is this: more than just a winery, it's a testament to the power of collaboration and vision. Founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild fame and Napa Valley pioneer Robert Mondavi, Opus One set out to create a wine that would stand with the world's best. This Franco-American partnership, forged in 1978, marked a revolutionary moment in the wine world. It combined the centuries-old winemaking traditions of Bordeaux with the bold innovation and terroir of Napa Valley. The result? A wine that has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's possible in California winemaking. From its first vintage in 1979 to today, Opus One has remained true to its founders' vision: to create wines of uncommon grace and elegance, capable of aging beautifully for decades. It's a philosophy that extends from the vineyard – where sustainable practices reign supreme – to the cellar, where patience and precision are the watchwords.

The Specs: Opus One's winemaking is a meticulous process, blending old-world techniques with cutting-edge technology. The wines are primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with classic Bordeaux varietals. After fermentation, they're aged in French oak barrels, with Opus One seeing about 18 months in 100% new oak.

What to Pair Them With: All three wines are best in the company of a juice-dripping porterhouse, a stately, herb-crusted rack of lamb, a rich and earthy mushroom risotto, or — simplest of all — an aged hard cheese.

Fun Fact: Before it was rechristened "Opus One,” in 1982, the wine (whose first vintage was created in 1979) was called “Napamedoc."
