NAVASCUES ENOLOGIA MAS DE MANCUSO

CARINENA, SPAIN

Why Buy: Check it: a rare (only 1,300 bottles produced!), single-vineyard 95-pointer from the great Navascués Enología, made with 50-70 year-old vines. Plus, from that same single vineyard, their excellent, 93-point Carinena 2019 and – a brilliant bargain red, at under $17 a bottle – their 93-point Garnacha 2019.

What They're Saying: In a rave review of the Mas de Mancuso Garnacha 2018, The Wine Advocate called it an "elegant," "balanced" wine with "great finesse" and "very good depth." The publication also lavished high praise on the 2019 ("dark, ripe, varietal and eminently Mediterranean," with a memorable "earthy rustic touch"), and declared the Mancuso 2019 "beautiful," with "fine-grained tannins and a long, dry finish."

The Story: In 2002, Jorge Navascués, a third-generation winemaker, embarked upon Mas de Mancuso: a pet project of recovering very old vines, and producing wines as close as possible to those made by his ancestors, with minimal intervention, all-organic farming, and hands-on labor at every step of the winemaking process. He even rented out an old winery, in Almonacid de la Sierra, to remind himself of his link to the past. The results – especially for wines at this price point – have been nothing short of extraordinary.

Our Tasting Notes: The 2018 Mas de Mancuso Garnacha is everything we love in a top-tier Spanish red: a wine of size, depth, concentration, but also agility and energy. The 2019 is strikingly different, with an earthiness and soulfulness that reward contemplation. The Mancuso 2019 could fool a lot of people, its finesse and structure recalling that of a wine that costs twice and even three times as much.

The Specs: The 2018 Mas de Mancuso was "fermented with 50% full clusters, according to WA, "that were foot-trodden and matured in oak barrels and concrete"; the 2019 Mas de Mancuso "fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in a Flextank egg"; as for the 2019 Mancuso, it was produced with 60+-year-old grapes and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with maturation occurring largely in underground concrete vats

Fun Fact: Jorge Navascués's father, Jesús, is one of the country’s leading oenologists and wine writers.

What to Pair Them With: Grilled meats; chicken romesco; salmon with chermoula; chickpea stew; gazpacho.
