NAVARRE, 'SOUVENIR IMPERIAL TRES VIEILLE RESERVE HORS D'AGE'
We have the great fortune to work with some of the most inspiring wines and spirits for our weekly offers, but every so often we come across a product that “wows” us so completely that no other word will suffice. Such was the case with Navarre Vieille Réserve Cognac that we offered a couple years back (and that rapidly sold out). Needless to say, when given an opportunity to offer the stunning 98-point Navarre ‘Souvenir Impérial Très Vieille Réserve Hors d’Age,’ we jumped at the chance. This collector spirit has never been available to the U.S. market before, and we’re thrilled to present our Cognac aficionados first dibs. Act quickly to secure your order before we sell out!
The Navarre estate, located within Cognac’s top cru, Grande Champagne, was founded in 1811, and current proprietor and fourth-generation distiller Jacky Navarre works under one main principle: “let nature do (most of) the work.” The “Vieille Réserve” on the label designates an XO-level Cognac, but in reality this is so much more. While an XO Cognac must be aged a minimum of 10 years, the youngest Cognac within Navarre’s Souvenir Impérial is from early 1970s (~45-50 years old), while the oldest is from 1958 (63 years old); this spirit has achieved a level of richness and complexity that has few equals. Jacky Navarre is considered "one of the last of the purists" in Cognac’s Grande Champagne, and we were lucky to secure a miniscule allocation of this treasure for our customers (Vinous).
The Souvenir Impérial is a blend of the estate’s oldest casks, distilled between the late 1950s and early 1970s, and was bottled in 2011 to commemorate the 200-year anniversary of the Navarre distilling family. The humid environment of the estate naturally reduces the spirit's proof during its decades-long maturation, and water is additionally added slowly throughout aging to arrive at bottling proof. The spirit is bottled at natural cask strength and is non-chill filtered, with no coloring nor additives whatsoever. The unassuming bottle, rare in an industry flush with glitzy packaging, houses a truly spectacular Cognac with seemingly endless layers of flavors and aromas that glide effortlessly between sweet tropical fruits, roasted walnuts, licorice, amaro, and warming spice. To put it simply, if you are going to buy only one bottle of Cognac this year, this should be it. Navarre is one of the most highly regarded artisanal Cognac producers today, and today’s ultra-rare Souvenir Impérial demonstrates why. Collect your bottle today!
