Chris Carpenter has long been receiving high acclaim for his extremely limited production wines: Lokoya, Cardinale and La Jota. Synonymous with power, ageability and finesse, his wines are the darling of any collector, representing the upper echelon of the Cabernet Sauvignon elite (along with their $250-$350 price point). However, any fan of Carpenter’s signature style—opulent yet balanced, concentrated yet poised—will appreciate our offer today. Crafted with meticulous care from the high elevation slopes of Mount Veeder, the 2017 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon is a lush and vivacious, triple 95-point Cabernet Sauvignon, produced in small quantities and crafted to be more accessible, approachable and affordable than his standard bearing lineup. Gracing the pages of Wine Spectator’s most recent Top 100 list, the 2017 Mt. Brave is a majestic example of the greatness Cabernet Sauvignon can achieve (in the hands of a master) from the extreme and rugged terrain of Mount Veeder.

I’ve always had an affinity for mountain fruit. Though it seems an insignificant factor to many, I encourage you to think about it every time you drink a wine from an extreme place. With a reputation and affinity for making wines from mountain terroir, “the winemaking precision of Chris Carpenter and his team is apparent across all their projects regardless of price point, making the Mt. Brave particularly impressive as a relative value...[and] punches above its weight across all metrics of power, complexity, length, and intrigue.” At the northern reaches of Mount Veeder, where the labor-intensive vines hug the undulating slopes—even the micro-climates have micro-climates. At 1,400 to 1,800 feet in elevation, Mt. Brave Vineyard lies at the northern reaches of the Mt. Veeder AVA and requires painstaking, intensive labor to farm them. The thin, rocky soils and steep slopes make water retention a challenge, but the vines benefit from the struggle. With stress, the vines produce unbelievably low yields and exceptionally concentrated berries. The high altitude keeps temperatures cool, thus elongating the ripening period while the vineyards position above the fog line ensures plenty of daily exposure to sunlight to ensure peak ripening. The result is insurmountable— “the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder bursts out of the glass with vivacious black currants, black cherries and wild blueberries…the palate explodes with fruit and freshness” (LPB, Wine Advocate). The vibrancy and energy are unmistakable—you can drink a whole bottle (though I recommend sharing with a friend...or two) and it never tastes heavy. Rich, velvety and plush—yes. But not heavy.

After being picked by hand over several weeks, in multiple passes to ensure that each row is picked at optimal ripeness, they use a combination of French cooperages to age the wines for 20 months prior to bottling. Bottling unfined and unfiltered to retain the power and complexity of this impressive Cabernet, the “2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mt. Veeder) is another huge, tannic wine from Mt. Brave. Inky dark fruit, blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, spice and new leather are all kicked up a few notches in this dramatic, unctuous wine. Huge tannins wrap around all of the fruit in a big, potent Cabernet endowed with tremendous personality and class.” For one week we’re offering this wine to our Concierge customers at a market low price! The perfect way to start the year, don’t miss your chance to stock up on this incredible wine for a steal.
