MT. BRAVE, CABERNET SAUVIGNON MT. VEEDER
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2019
When it comes to Cabernet Sauvignon, power + ageability = exactly the kind of wine we live to bring you.
Like this big beauty from Mt. Brave, which sent James Suckling into a swoon. "Blackberries and black currants with grape skin, lead pencil and pine cone," he began his 96-point rave. "Full-bodied with round tannins and juicy fruit. Tamed tannins. Bright finish. Classy and authentic. Beautiful now, but will age beautifully."
Mt. Brave is, for me, one of the most intriguing wineries in Napa, in part because of its grasp of what I'll call high-low dynamics — this is a high-elevation estate vineyard with some of the lowest yields in all of the Napa Valley — and in part because of its star winemaker, Chris Carpenter, who made his reputation at Lokoya and Cardinale, and who understands how to marry classicism with fruit-forwardness.
He also knows how to let the terroir speak through his wines. Here, that means Mt. Veeder, which sits on an ancient seabed, on the eastern slopes of the Mayacamas Range. The deep, rocky soils could hardly be more ideal for producing world-class wine. But no less important an influence on these grapes is the many micro-climates that result from the steep, twisting mountain slopes.
Carpenter has fashioned a gorgeous homage to that Mt. Veeder terroir with this Bordeaux-style blend.
You're going to revel in its vivid aromatics, its depth and length, and, yes, its promise of a long and beautiful maturation.
Pick up a bottle or two or three, and thank us later. But hurry! — our allocation is not large.
