MOUNT GAY SINGLE ESTATE SERIES

LIMITED EDITION RUM

BARBADOS

Why Buy: You've heard of farm-to-table cooking? Well, this is the spirits-world equivalent: a cane-to-bottle rum. In other words, a true terroir rum. The sugarcane was grown at Mount Gay, the world's oldest run-rumming estate (it celebrated its 320th anniversary this year), then fermented, distilled, aged and blended at the label's distillery. To further gild the lily: this is also a small-batch rum, distilled entirely in a copper pot still, and produced as an ultra-rare limited edition (only 1200 bottles, all individually-numbered).

What They're Saying: "An impeccable rum," Forbes raved, that is "certainly of a piece with other Mount Gay rums, especially Black Barrel. But it’s far deeper, richer, and multi-layered."

The Story: When Mount Gay purchased 324 acres of the old Mount Gay Estate and Oxford Estate, in Barbados, it began cultivating sugarcane — making the company, as they say in the business world, a "fully vertically integrated operation" for the first time since the early 20th century. Of the 324 acres, only 190 are devoted to sugarcane production: an amount insufficient to meet the needs of the brand’s core range, but enough, the company says, to produce one exclusive bottling. For this, the first release of the Single Estate Series, Mount Gay's Master Blender, Trudiann Branker, crafted a blend of small-batch rums that were produced exclusively from the 2016 and 2017 sugar cane harvests. The blend was distilled in a 100% copper still and matured in ex-bourbon (Quercus Alba) barrels. No coloring was added, and the rum was also non-chill filtered, leaving intact its inherent, authentic character.

Our Tasting Notes: This is a rum to enjoy neat, the better to appreciate its marvelously delicate aromatics (you'll pick up notes of pear, plum, fresh-cut flowers, dried fruits, nutmeg, lemon) and its expressive palate, with its hints of pineapple, sea salt, leather, ripe banana, and star anise. Also, the better to appreciate its sheer drinkability; the lack of abrasion on the tongue is immediately noticeable, and welcome. You'll also want to sit with it a while, because, like a good Bordeaux, it opens up over time, revealing more of its nuances and character. All in all, this is a remarkable achievement for the Mount Gay team, and, at the same time, a fascinating departure from its core range that portends all manner of extraordinary expressions to come.

Proof: 110 (55% ABV).

Fun Fact: Branker subjected the rum to a longer-than-usual fermentation process (9 days, as opposed to the usual 3 or 4), which gives the rum, not just greater character, but also a quality of having been coaxed more fully to completion.

Our Guarantee: We always buy and source direct, so you can be confident that your rum will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance. Don't hesitate to secure yours today!
