But it gets even better: this new release is a blend of pot and column still rums, aged in American whiskey casks for 20 years in Barbados, where both the heat and humidity accelerate the aging process – thereby turning 20 years into something more like 40 years. And, to further gild the lily: it was finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for an additional year.
The Story: Mount Gay's Master Blender, Trudiann Branker, has long been a devotee of PX sherry, and one day she got to thinking: what if I were to take one of our already long-aged rums and treat it to a spell in a PX sherry cask, used to fortify the great and distinct wines of Jerez? What richness would result? That launched her on a long, exploratory quest, in which she spent months going through Mount Gay's inventory of barrels. At last she found her quarry: a stash of 20-year-old rum casks with the "body and character" she was looking for, and that she knew would only further be enhanced further by time spent in PX sherry casks.
Our Tasting Notes: The tropical aging, combined with the PX sherry cask finish, gives this an aromatic intricacy and a mellow roundedness that elevates it into the rarefied company of elite sipping rums. The thrill of the nose is more than fulfilled by the experience on the palate, as the rum shows itself more fully and you are enveloped by a complex weave of dark cherry, plum, and salted caramel, and banana, and carried to the long, sinuous finish by a gentle current of rich, salted nuts.
ABV: 45%; non-chill filtered, with no coloring or flavoring added.
Fun Fact: Branker is only the fifth master blender in the 300-year-plus history of Mount Gay, and the first woman.
