Today we have something incredibly rare and extremely special: an independently bottled, single cask of Macallan 12 Year through Montrose & Sons. You've obviously heard of the iconic distillery Macallan. Yet as some of you have discovered, independent bottlings are one of the best kept secrets and the most exciting things happening in the world of Single Malt Scotch.

The history of independent bottlers started in the early 1900s when casks of Scotch were sold to different merchants who would then bottle the whisky to sell. As each cask was bought from a different distiller, merchants began labelling the bottles with the name of the distillery and age designation of the Scotch to distinguish one from another. As the Scotch industry exploded and giant brands were created, these independent bottlers remained under-the-radar for a niche market—collectors and Scotch aficionados.

So, what's the hype about? Are independent bottlings better than those bottled at the distillery? No. The goal here is not to create a better whisky, but to create something that is absolutely singular—essentially, this is a single barrel, single batch, single vintage, Single Malt Scotch , as opposed to a Single Malt Scotch, which is a blend created from multiple barrels of various ages. Independent bottlers will taste and select specific barrels that meet their quality and taste standards. The best part is that since independent bottlers do not have the expensive production and carrying costs associated to a big distillery, they are able to keep their unique expressions at prices that make them incredible values.

Today’s whisky comes from The Macallan, one of the most renowned houses in the world of whisky and one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Founded in 1824, Macallan has since gained the reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. One of the things that makes The Macallan so unique is their cask selection program. Oak casks used for their whiskies are crafted to the distillery’s specifications and account for up to 80% of the final aromas and flavors. As wood is a natural product, each tree is different and in turn, imparts different flavors and colors to the whisky during maturation. Today’s 12-year-old was matured at The Macallan distillery in sherry oak and is a classic, full-bodied Single Malt: deliciously smooth palate of dried fruits, spice and wood smoke complimented by notes of flowers and sherry on the finish. For one week only, or until sold out, you can add this singular expression to your collection. This is not one to miss!
