DOMAINE MONGEARD-MUGNERET
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2023
WHY BUY: This 2023 portfolio reminded us, yet again, why smart Burgundy lovers have been quietly stashing away Mongeard-Mugneret bottles while everyone else fights over more famous names. Industry insiders revere them for their command Grands Échezeaux, Échezeaux, and Vosne-Romanée, with Allen Meadows of Burghound hailing them as one of Burgundy's elite producers and ranking them second only to Domaine de la Romanée Conti in their handling of Grands Échezeaux. But check it, folks: this Grands Échezeaux, sourced from 70-year-old vines, is — wait for it — 1/6th the price of DRC. Then again, extraordinary value can be found up and down this stellar portfolio. This is a hidden gem of a producer, and we simply adore its ability to blend power and silk so persuasively and seductively.
OUR TASTING NOTES: These have to rank as some of the best wine values in serious Burgundy. Take their $41 Bourgogne Pinot Noir: it's one of those wines that makes you pause mid-sip and think, "Wait, how is this so good for the price?” We loved the abundance of red fruit, and the way the earthy backbone and clarity signal that you’re far from a mass production effort. The Fixin surprised us, in a good way, with its spicy limestone bite; there's something almost electric about northern Côte de Nuits fruit when it's handled this well. The Vosne-Romanée is where things get really seductive, wrapping you in that silky texture the village is famous for while the aromatics keep shifting and developing in ways that only good wines do. Moving into Premier Cru territory, the Orveaux delivers both great depth, with its lingering notes of blackcurrant and raspberry, and great length; it’s the kind of wine that's delicious and ready now, but clearly has more to say over the coming years. The Savigny Narbantons, sourced from 53-year-old vines, is a thoughtful, quietly powerful expression, and reminds us that it’s possible for a wine to achieve this kind of complexity without showing off. Finally, the Grand Crus … The Échezeaux brings that succulent red fruit elegance you expect from those precious mid-slope sites, while the Grands Échezeaux, from magnificent, 70-year-old vines, is all concentrated refinement and sneaky seduction, the kind of wine you don’t soon forget.
THE STORY: The family does not lack for bona fides or pedigree. The Mongeards' Burgundian roots stretch all the way back to 1786, with records showing a Mongeard working as vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. The modern estate took shape in 1945, when 16-year-old Jean Mongeard assumed control and produced his debut vintage with such skill that three Burgundian legends (Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville, and Henri Gouges) purchased his entire production … but first insisted (or so the legend goes) he double his asking price. Today Vincent Mongeard, who joined his father in 1975, oversees 75 acres split among 35 diverse appellations with the kind of hands-on management that extends from Grand Cru parcels down to their $41 Bourgogne Pinot Noir. Vincent's return to traditional methods, including minimal filtration and judicious oak usage, has enhanced both the purity and aging potential of these wines while maintaining the estate's winningly low profile. We love that what actually matters, is what they have given themselves over to every day: expressing terroir with clarity and elegance across their remarkable portfolio of sites.
WHAT TO PAIR THEM WITH: The lighter wines are going to excel with a roast chicken or pan-seared salmon, while the Grand Crus are begging to keep company with heartier preparations: duck confit, rack of lamb, or an aged cut of beef.
OUR GUARANTEE: As always, we only buy and source directly from the estate to ensure that your wines arrive with pristine provenance. As we said, these represent some of the best values in serious Burgundy today — secure yours while the secret stays hidden!
