DOMAINE MONGEARD-MUGNERET

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2022

Why Buy: Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret continues to fly under the radar of many Burgundy lovers in the US. Which is a pity, especially at prices that are almost too good to be believed. We’re hoping to change its low profile with these 5 classically-styled, complex wines from their 2022 vintage. Each is drawn from a variety of parcels throughout the Côte d’Or, and we can tell you that each pays the deepest honor to this revered terroir. And not only that, but each is also built to age on and on and on. From the approachable Bourgogne Pinot Noir to the magnificent Echezeaux Grand Cru, this is winemaking that, to paraphrase what used to be said, wistfully, of the great songwriters of old: they just don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

The Specs: The grapes are hand-harvested from mid-slope vineyards with southeast exposure, where chalk and clay soils provide ideal growing conditions. Vincent's commitment to traditional vinification methods, including judicious use of oak and minimal intervention, allows each site to speak clearly through the wine.

What They're Saying: Allen Meadows of Burghound places Mongeard-Mugneret among the very elite producers of Burgundy, second only to DRC in their handling of Grands Echezeaux. He particularly praises how well these wines age, noting that patience reveals their true complexity and depth.

Our Tasting Notes: This portfolio gives us a remarkable tour through Burgundian terroir. The Bourgogne Pinot Noir offers bright red fruits and earthy undertones — a perfect introduction to the domaine's style. The Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Narbantons shows more muscle and minerality, while the Vosne-Romanée captures the appellation's renowned silky texture and aromatic complexity. The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Orveaux steps up the intensity and structure, leading beautifully to the Echezeaux Grand Cru, which demonstrates why these wines deserve their legendary status.

The Story: The Mongeard family's roots in Vosne-Romanée run deep — all the way back to 1786, when records show a Mongeard working as vigneron for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 1945, at just 16 years old, Jean Mongeard assumed control of the family estate. His debut vintage impressed three of Burgundy's luminaries — Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville, and Henri Gouges — so much that they purchased the entire production, but only after insisting he double his asking price. Today, Jean's son Vincent, who joined the domaine in 1975, oversees 75 acres across 35 appellations. Vincent's return to traditional methods, including minimal filtration, has enhanced the purity and aging potential of these wines.

Fun Fact: When the young Jean Mongeard made his first vintage in 1945, he had no idea how to price it. When three legendary Burgundian producers offered to buy his entire production, they insisted that the novice double his asking price!

Our Guarantee: Remember, friends – we always buy direct and we only source direct, so you can rest assured that your wine will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance!
