MI FAMILIA FLORES WIXARIKA JOVEN TEQUILA
JALISCO, MEXICO

Just look at these bottles.

Each one is finished by an artist from Wixárika, an indigenous people living in the Sierra Madres, in Mexico. To cast your eyes on it is to see the end product of the patience, skill, and hand-eye coordination needed to place more than 17,000 beads by hand.

It’s a process that can take a full week per bottle, and one that neatly parallels the process that produced this wonderful tequila: a process painstaking and deliberate.

And pure.

Charcoal-filtered and clear, this limited-production tequila from Mi Familia Flores is as colorless as water. But don't let the absence of color fool you. There are depths here, surprising depths, along with the crispness and clarity that defines the spirit.

Blended from tequilas that have already spent real time in barrel, then run through charcoal filtration to achieve clarity and purity, it abounds in the sort of smoother, rounder notes that you can really only get from aging.

So, while it might look like something you'd knock back in a single go, it has the complexity of something you'd rather sit with for an hour.
The nose opens gently, with cooked agave arriving first, followed by a light citrus lift and something floral hovering just behind it. Now vanilla and honey mosey in from the edges. But all of this is just to prime you for what’s next.

On the palate, it's infinitely silkier than you might expect, given its water-like disposition. It’s also much more dimensional. We loved the way the sweet agave gives way to pear and green apple, then to tropical fruit, and then to a sinuous one-two of vanilla and caramel. The finish stretches out like a chaise lounge, with that tropical fruit note and caramel character trailing into a last touch of oak before it fades out, smooth and clean.
Another hit from the great Mi Familia Flores.

By the way, it makes for a pretty great Mexican Old Fashioned, which has become something of a pre-dinner favorite around here.

The crystal-clear tequila plays the role of the whiskey, and then you sub in agave nectar for simple syrup, and finish it with a couple dashes of Angostura, along with (for garnish) a strip of expressed orange peel. The vanilla and oak notes of the tequila echo the woodsiness of a whisky, which is wonderful and clever, but what we love most (and what has us hooked) is the way the drink delivers oomph without heaviness.

Or drink it neat, and savor the (literally) refined purity of this great tequila.
