MERRY EDWARDS, KLOPP RANCH, PINOT NOIR

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2015

From the time I accepted my first Sommelier position in San Francisco more than a decade ago to today, it’s been widely understood that Merry Edwards is a Pinot Noir icon. As one of Sonoma County’s great Pinot Noir producers, her wines have been featured in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year on numerous occasions in addition to landing a Top 10 spot for her 2007 Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc in 2009. As a Sonoma County wine pioneer and one of California’s first female winemakers, she began her 45-year winemaking career at Mount Eden Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1974, followed by her work as founding winemaker at Matanzas Creek in 1977. After purchasing a piece of land in outside Sebastopol in 1996, she planted the first estate vineyard in 1998 and Merry Edwards Winery was born. Over the past two decades, the popularity of her wines has soared, and her terroir-driven single vineyard Pinot Noirs are some of the most sought after wines coming out of Sonoma.

As a wine that is certainly on my short list, we’re always on the hunt for an allocation. So when we were offered the chance to secure a 40 case lot of her 2015 Klopp Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir, of course we jumped on it. Today’s feature is from the Queen of Pinot herself, Merry Edwards, and is sourced from the 26-acre Klopp Ranch Vineyard. Planted to Pinot Noir clones Pommard, Pommard 5, Joseph Swan and Dijon Clones 115, 667 and 777, the 2015 Klopp Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir exudes rich notes of dark raspberry, black cherry, crushed rose petal and spice. With impressive depth, an emphasis on lush, racy fruit and a remarkable ability to pair elegance with muscle – a rare combination for California wines - this wine truly captures the exuberance of the Russian River. This stunning wine can easily be enjoyed over the next decade but is sensational now. So for those looking to stock up on a wine that you can happily pop the cork at any time, this is your chance. Normally coming in at $80 a bottle, we’re offering 20% off this stunning wine for one week or until sold out.
