MAURO VEGLIO BAROLO

PIEDMONT, ITALY 2019

Why Buy: At a time when some Barolo producers are asking a pretty penny, Mauro Veglio is a glorious throwback. Here's a classically-styled, 94-point Barolo that honors its terroir while also preserving your wallet; at less than $30 a bottle, it's an absolute steal of a deal, a delicious and wonderfully versatile wine that you can drink right now, and that you'll want to buy by the case.

What They're Saying: Monica Larner, in her 94-point rave for The Wine Advocate, hailed its aromatic bouquet ("red and purple fruits, tangy cedarwood, potting soil and pressed rose"), its "concentration," and its "saturated" intensity

The Story: Veglio, who has been at the controls since 1986, helped to usher in the more modern style of Barolo that we've seen take root over the past three decades. Unlike more traditionally-styled Barolos that require more time in the cellar, his terroir-driven expressions are eminently approachable — as he told Forbes, his goal is to make wines that "you don’t have to wait years to develop, wines that you can drink when we release them." That means Barolos with softer tannins, and a profile, he noted, that is "more like the Grand Crus of Burgundy, not Bordeaux." No herbicides or pesticides are ever used (pheromones are deployed instead, to confuse the mating habits of insects), grapes are exposed to natural wild yeasts, and aging is only done in small, French barriques.

Specs: To create the final blend for the 2019 vintage, Veglio used fruit from three different villages (Arborina and Gattera in La Morra; and Castelletto in Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba).

Our Tasting Notes: All the size and intensity that you could want in a Barolo is here, but what seduced us in our tastings was its softer side, namely, its delicate aromatics and its soft-textured palate — an affirmation of all that Nebbiolo brings to the glass. A finely-delineated expression that rewards thoughtful contemplation and hours of slow sipping.

ABV: 14%

Fun Fact: The Veglios have been stewards of the land in La Morra since the early 1900s.
