MAURO VEGLIO, ARBORINA, BAROLO

PIEDMONT, ITALY 2013

The wines of Barolo have undeniably captured my heart. The scenery alone is a stunning display, especially in the heart of Autumn following the harvest - when the morning fog encapsulates the rolling hills, with some of the most famous vineyards in history emerging from below. The wines are intense, perfumed, long-lived and have the ability to marry power with finesse like no other, while every commune exemplifies an inspiring and utterly unique character of the late ripening, majestic Nebbiolo grape. Of the five communes, I would have to say some of my favorites come from the picturesque hilltop village of La Morra – offering some of the most seductive, supple, velvety wines coming out of the region. It’s here where Mauro Veglio produces a wine that is marked by its expressive aromatics and tannic backbone. Like Burgundy, there are a number significant vineyards in Barolo that produce outstanding wine, often surpassing the very best vineyard sites in the region, depending on the vintage and producer. This is the case for Mauro Veglio’s 2013 Arborina. Full of energy and drive, the wine produced from this site continues to prove itself, offering true personality and class. And in an exceptional vintage with a skilled producer – the wine is truly sublime.

Mauro Veglio’s Arborina has vibrancy, striking aromatics and remarkable depth, all true marks of this exceptional Barolo vintage and vineyard site. The 2013 Barolo vintage produced wines with “silky tannins, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures” with a number of “thrilling, utterly captivating wines that speak to the pedigree and class that are the signature of the best Barolo vintages,” (AG). The vineyard lies on the side of a hill that rises toward the village of Ciotto, with southeastern sun exposure. Cultivated at an elevation of 250 to 400 m in elevation, the vines are planted to soils that are poor in nutrients, consisting of Sant’Agata marl, which is a mix of clay, sand and limestone. Veglio’s approach to winemaking is rooted in short macerations on the skins in rotary fermenters, fermentation in stainless steel with strict temperature control and aging the wines in small oak barrels – 40% new and 60% used for 24 months. Exuding soft, elegant tannins, incredible persistence, complexity and a freshness and elegance that displays the best characteristics of what La Morra has to offer, we’re thrilled to offer the 94pt 2013 Mauro Veglio Barolo ‘Arborina’ for the lowest price in the country!
