MATHILDE CHAPOUTIER SÉLECTIONS, DUCHÉ D'UZÈS

RHÔNE VALLEY, FRANCE

Michel Chapoutier is one of the world’s most celebrated winemakers. He took over the family business in 1990 at age 26 and transformed the Rhône-based winery into a luxury status symbol; the Chapoutier brand was voted just this past year as France’s Most Admired Wine Brand. Regularly producing 100-point wines, Chapoutier can easily command bottle prices upwards of $300 with the reds and whites from Hermitage. Yet over the years the portfolio has expanded and now Chapoutier produces wines from all corners of the world, including value-driven styles that can be enjoyed every day. Michel’s daughter, Mathilde, has joined her father in this expansion to become the eighth generation in the family to make wine, upholding the quality of the iconic brand and crafting stellar wines at prices that won’t break the bank. Today we’re featuring two must-have wines from an up-and-coming region within the Rhône Valley, the 2017 Duché d’Uzès Rouge and 2018 Duché d’Uzès Blanc. Today’s special mix-and-match pricing takes each bottle to under $12(!) when purchasing 12 or more bottles. With value like this coming from iconic Chapoutier, there’s no reason not to stock up on multiple cases of both.

Mathilde grew up in Hermitage and after taking over as Chief of Strategy and Business Development for the Chapoutier group, Mathilde found her niche producing unpretentious wines from France and Spain that have quickly garnered critical acclaim. Mathilde immediately established herself as a more than worthy counterpart to her father: she entered the scene with her Grand Ferrage Rosé from Côtes de Provence, which Elin McCoy at Bloomberg has called one of the “best rosés under $25.” Today’s selections come from the Duché d’Uzès appellation, a region awarded AOC status in 2013 and located in the southwest corner of the Rhône Valley. Though there are fewer than 50 producers within the appellation—noted for its hot days and cool nights (optimal conditions for wine production)—the wines are quickly attracting attention from consumers and critics. Jancis Robinson reports, “suffice to say that the reds are really worth seeking out by all aficionados of red Rhône. Finding this level of typicality and complexity...is rare indeed.” Realizing the potential to produce great value driven reds, whites, and rosés, Mathilde chose this up-and-coming region to complement her own burgeoning career.

The red is a blend of Syrah and Grenache from clay-limestone soils, and the white is comprised of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Marsanne. On their own, the wines are well balanced and approachable now, yet both are powerful on the palate and pair deliciously with food. These wines absolutely over deliver on price point, making for an offer not to be missed. The next generation of Chapoutier is here!
