MASCOTA VINEYARDS, "BIG BAT", CABERNET SAUVIGNON

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA 2014

It’s no secret that the wines of Argentina provide some of the best value you can find in the world of wine. For every serious red – full of depth, concentration and power - produced in any other part of the world, its Argentinian counterpart is often a fraction of the price. Undoubtedly easier on the pocket book, it’s the luscious, rich structure of these wines that draw people in and keep them coming back for more. Ripeness is key here and in the rain shadow of the Andes Mountains, the fierce, dusty, hot climate is extreme and unforgiving. Yet, as we always say in wine, the greatest wines come from grapes that struggle, and for our wine today, no statement could be closer to the truth. A superb iteration from Mendoza, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a result of wide ranging temperatures from vines planted on sandy loam at 1100 meters in elevation.  It’s here where master winemaker Rodolfo “Opi” Sadler produces some of the most highly acclaimed wines in the region. Recognized as Argentinian Producer of the Year 2014 and a Decanter Gold Metal for their 2013 Cabernet Franc – Mascota’s wines change the way you think about a value wine in Argentina. Though many immediately think of Malbec as the country’s claim to fame, it’s Mascota’s Cabernet that is the source for their flagship 2014 “Big Bat” Cabernet Sauvignon.

Coming from the Uco Valley, home to the region’s highest vineyards, the picturesque valley is bordered with desert to the south, hills to the north and is an entirely self-contained tranquil paradise. Dissected by multiple tributaries, the Uco vineyards sit at a higher altitude than most and remain relatively cool compared to the neighboring regions. In combination with ferocious winds that blow down from the mountains, which lowers the yields and thickens the grape skins, the wine produced is spectacularly concentrated with dark brooding fruit and black pepper spice. The wine spends 20 days fermenting on the skins, followed by 18 months in French oak prior to being bottled. And the best part - not only does this wine provide an outstanding price to quality, it is delicious now and will age beautifully for years to come. As the wine continues to score massive points and rave reviews year after year, we’re elated to offer this wine at the best price in the country, for up to 20% off!
